There is seldom a time when there is not some kind of immense human suffering happening in our world. The trauma of war rages in many nations at the moment, and there is immense tension and anxiety with what has been unfolding in Ukraine. As many of you will be aware, we have a chapter of God’s Squad in Ukraine. This personal connection with suffering magnifies the reality and painful truth of the darkness in our world.
The situation they are enduring is as dark as you think it might be. The families of many within our community of our Ukrainian chapter have been on the road to safer regions in the west. Some of our members however remain in the heart and heat of a very hostile and dangerous environment. They remain working hard, not just for themselves but for their community, in a variety of challenging environments.
Like all in Ukraine, and other areas of war and oppression, their families have been separated, their children are seeing things children should not see and their young people are having to grow into adults before their time. Their suffering is an unfolding daily trauma and it is a dangerous situation for sure – but despite the uncertainty, our people and the nation remain resolute.
Most of our families are safe. We know that our community of God’s Squad in Ukraine are deeply committed to the cause of Christ, we know that they are not just looking out for themselves but for those around them also. We know too that, as we have seen over the years of our visits to Ukraine, they are people of immense faith, also possessing, like most Ukrainians, an incredible resourcefulness and strength of character that has been forged through trials.
We pray for them – and we also pray for friends in Russia who are being oppressed for standing up against this war. We are very grateful to those of our friends and supporters who have been enquiring as to the welfare of our Ukrainian chapter. We have passed these messages on to our community of members and their families. Thank you for these. We are working to do everything we can to support them and those they are caring for.
Sometimes words fail us. Sometimes we need the gift of an artist to guide us in our prayers and response. What follows is a poem called ‘I No Longer Pray for Peace’ by Ann Weems, which we understand was written for Ash Wednesday in 2003, which falls on 2 March this year. It seems remarkably relevant for our times.

“I No Longer Pray for Peace”
On the edge of war,
one foot already in,
I no longer pray for peace,
I pray for miracles.
I pray that stone hearts
will turn to tenderheartedness,
and evil intentions will turn
to mercifulness,
and all the soldiers already deployed
will be snatched out of harm’s way,
and the whole world will be
astounded onto its knees.
I pray that all the “God talk”
will take bones,
and stand up and shed
its cloak of faithlessness,
and walk again in its powerful truth.
I pray that the whole world
might sit down together
and share its bread and its wine.
Some say there is no hope,
but then I’ve always applauded the holy fools
who never seem to give up on
the scandalousness of our faith:
that we are loved by God……
that we can truly love one another.

Заява про ситуацію в Україні
В наш час дуже рідко відбуваються події коли страждає така велика кількість людей. Війна завдає неминучої травми всій нації на даний момент, так як те що відбувається в Україні викликає величезне напруження і тривогу у всьому світі. Багато з вас знають, що у нас є послідовники «God’s Squad» в Україні. Цей зв’язок з людьми, які страждають в даний момент дозволяє усвідомити реальність і болючу правду несправедливості і зла, яка існує у світі.
Ситуація в якій знаходиться Україна на даний момент є настрашнішою і найтяжчою, яка тільки може бути. Багато сімей членів нашої організації зараз залишились на вулиці або вимушені тікати до інших країн. Деякі ще досі залишаються в самому серці того, що відбувається, у ворожому та небезпечному середовищі. Вони залишаються та тяжко працюють, не тільки для себе, але і для суспільства та Українського народу в цілому.
Як і на інших територіях, де зараз відбувається війна та пригноблення простих людей, Українські сім’ї роз’єднані, діти бачать речі, які вони ніколи не повинні бачити та молодь повинна ставати дорослою завчасно. Вони всі на даний момент вже травмовані тим, що відбувається, але безперечно залишаються рішучими, як ніколи, незважаючи на невизначеність і неясність. Ми знаємо, що наші «God’s Squad» члени в Україні вірять в правду і в Ісуса Христа, ми знаємо, що вони піклуються не тільки про себе, але і про людей, що навколо них. Ми також знаємо і бачили, через призму років, коли ми відвідували Україну, що вони нація з непохитною вірою, сильні духом та незламні характером.
Ми молимося за вас і за всю Україну, ми також молимося за всіх людей в Росії і Білорусі, які не бояться і виступають проти війни. Ми дуже вдячні нашим друзям і тим хто підтримує нас за постійні запити про стан наших Українських членів та їх сімей. Ми стараємося донести до них і передати їм всі ваші повідомлення. Дякую за них. Ми працюємо над тим, щоб зробити все можливе для пітримки українців та їхніх сімей.
Деколи світ нас підводить. Деколи нам потрібний дар артиста, хужника чи письменника, щоб направляти нас в наших молитвах та відгуках. А далі слідує вірш Анни Уімс «Я більше не молюсь за мир», який, як ми розуміємо, був написаний в Попільну Середу, яка вважається першим днем великого Великоднього посту, і припадає на друге Березня цього року і є дуже доречним в теперішній час.
